From Apps to Objects
Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation
The growth of the computational capabilities of our mobile devices, the expansion of the data transmission capacity via the Internet, the facilitation in the execution of otherwise long and boring activities, are some factors that have contributed to the explosion of the Applications offer in the last years.
In this workshop you will conceptualize meta-objects inspired by famous smartphone applications. You will be guided by a speculative reverse engineering and reconstruction operation: Instead of designing apps to offer a new service or to improve an existing one, you will be analyzing the experience we have when we use an application, and then rebuild it into a physical, tangible, corporeal version.

Dr Michael believes some of the most meaningful learning happens when open, collaborative, experimental, and at times, disruptive and slightly chaotic. His approach to educating is an attempt to break away from ‘traditional’ lecturing, from memorization and regurgitation of ‘facts’ and information, and bring students into hands-on, practical learning environments. Teaching and learning is a process and using processes forces us to think about the end-to-end experience of students, and to constantly adjust our teaching methods and strategies. This process is an approach that combines design thinking, design making and design breaking
